If you recently had a mammogram, you might receive a call from us asking you to return for more tests. This is known as a “callback.” A call to return can cause anxiety, but it’s important to know that it doesn’t always mean what is found is cancerous. Let’s discuss what to expect during the return visit.
The doctors may need a closer look at something they saw on your mammogram. There are several reasons why this might happen:
- Overlapping normal tissue or a change from a previous mammogram
- Dense breast tissue: This can make it harder to see specific areas, so we need to take extra images. Some women have dense breast tissue, which means there is more fibrous or glandular tissue than fat. This can make it harder to see specific areas on a mammogram, so we might need to take extra images to get a clearer view.
- An area of concern: If we see something new from your prior mammograms, we must check it out more closely.
What happens during the return visit to Elizabeth Wende Breast Care (EWBC)?
You will return to one of our several offices for more tests if you get a call to return. These might include:
- Additional mammogram images: We might need to take more images of your breast from different angles.
- Ultrasound: This test uses sound waves to take an image of your breast. It helps us see if the area we are investigating is solid or filled with fluid. You can learn more about the procedure here.
- In a few cases, a breast biopsy may be required to evaluate the finding. A breast biopsy involves taking a small sample of breast tissue to examine it more closely under a microscope. You can learn more about the procedure here.
What should I do if I get a call to return?
First, try to stay calm. Remember, needing extra images doesn’t mean you have breast cancer. It just means we need more information to be sure everything is okay.
Here are some steps to take:
Follow the instructions we give you
Return to the EWBC office as soon as you can for the follow-up tests. At EWBC, we will try to get you back the same day.
Do not be afraid to ask us any questions. We’re here to help you understand what is happening.
- Most callbacks do not result in a cancer diagnosis. Many times, we find that everything is normal after the extra tests.
Getting a call after a mammogram to return can be scary, but rest assured we are doing everything we can to make sure you are okay. It’s our way of making sure your breasts are healthy. We will contact you and try to get you back the same day or whenever is convenient for you within a few days. If you have any questions, please call us. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
