We are thrilled to honor Dr. Stamatia Destounis, one of our remarkable Breast Imaging Radiologists and the Managing Partner at Elizabeth Wende Breast Care (EWBC), as she reaches an incredible milestone of 30 years with our office! Dr. Destounis began her career at EWBC with a breast imaging fellowship under the direction of Dr. Wende Logan-Young. Upon completion, Dr. Destounis formally joined the practice, where she has been practicing breast imaging for the last 30 years.

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Destounis has been the guiding light in providing exceptional care and has played a pivotal role in advancing breast imaging technology at EWBC, the greater Rochester area, and across the country and worldwide. Her unwavering dedication, expertise, and compassion have touched the lives of countless individuals in their breast health journeys.

Dr. Destounis has been at the forefront of early detection, utilizing state-of-the-art imaging techniques to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage. Her meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy have saved lives and provided peace of mind to our patients and their families.

Dr. Destounis has been honored for her preeminence in the field through the prestigious designation of Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) Fellow in 2010, followed by the American College of Radiology (ACR) Fellow in 2011, and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) Fellow in 2017. Dr. Destounis was honored with the appointment as Chair of the ACR Breast Commission in 2021 and currently serves as Chair of the ACR Breast MRI Accreditation Committee. She is a member of numerous ACR committees, including the ACR Practice Parameters Committee and the ACR BI-RADS Committee, demonstrating her dedication to her field. She serves as an ACR Image Reviewer for Breast MRI and Breast Ultrasound accreditation, where her role is to ensure that others practicing breast imaging around the country provide optimal imaging to patients.

Dr. Destounis is a reviewer for several peer-review journals and is the Deputy Editor for Academic Radiology and the Breast Editor for the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine. She sits on many volunteer boards related to research and education within the field of Radiology, including serving on medical advisory committees for several companies in the breast imaging industry.

Dr. Destounis is a well-renowned published author with peer-review publications dating back to 1994 on various important breast imaging topics. Dr. Destounis believes in the importance of research and innovation, with her practice being an early pioneer in implementing digital mammography, breast MRI, digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), and risk assessment. She has been a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on numerous breast imaging device studies, including digital mammography, computer-aided detection, breast MRI, automated breast ultrasound, and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT). She is currently working with several artificial intelligence products.

We are immensely grateful for the contributions of Dr. Destounis and her tireless efforts in raising the standards of breast imaging. Her unwavering dedication and commitment have profoundly impacted our office and the community we serve.
