Facts About Breast Screening

Here are five key facts about breast screening from the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI):

  1. Annual Screening Begins at Age 40: The SBI recommends that women of average risk begin annual mammography screenings at age 40. This early and regular screening can significantly improve the chances of detecting breast cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage.

  2. Screening Saves Lives: Research shows that regular mammograms can reduce breast cancer deaths by 40%. Early detection through screening allows for more effective treatment options, including less invasive treatments and better overall outcomes.

  3. Higher Risk = Earlier Screening: Women who are at higher risk of breast cancer (due to family history, genetic mutations like BRCA1 or BRCA2, or other factors) may need to start screening earlier than 40. Consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended for a personalized screening plan.

  4. Breast Density Matters: Women with dense breast tissue have a higher risk of breast cancer. Additionally, dense tissue can make it harder to spot cancer on a mammogram. Supplemental screening such as ultrasound or MRI may be recommended for women with dense breasts.

  5. 3D Mammography Improves Detection: 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) is a newer technology that provides more detailed images of the breast, improving cancer detection rates and reducing the chances of false positives, especially in women with dense breast tissue.

These facts emphasize the importance of understanding personal risk and using advanced screening techniques to enhance early detection.
